Oral Cancer Screenings
At Boutique for Cosmetic Dentistry, the health of our patients is our highest priority. With that being said, early detection is very important. The Oral Cancer Foundation reports that approximately 53,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year alone, and at Boutique for Cosmetic Dentistry we are determined to provide in-depth examination and early detection. Oral cancer is far too often discovered in late stage development, the primary reason for the consistently high death rate. Oral cancer treatment often results in disfiguring effects on patients, and can seriously compromise their quality of life. Early detection and diagnosis can make a tremendous difference in life expectancy.
The VELscope® System is a revolutionary hand-held device that provides dentists, hygienists, and other oral health care professionals with an easy-to-use adjunctive mucosal examination system for the early detection of abnormal tissue. It is based on the direct visualization of tissue fluorescence and the changes in fluorescence that occur when abnormalities are present. The VELscope® System Handpiece emits a safe blue light into the oral cavity, which excites the tissue from the surface of the epithelium through to the basement membrane and into the stroma beneath, causing it to fluoresce. The clinician is then able to immediately view the different fluorescence responses to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue. In fact, the VELscope® System is the only adjunctive device cleared by the FDA to help discover oral mucosal lesions that might not be apparent or visible to the naked eye and to help surgeons determine the appropriate surgical margin for tumor excision. Under examination with the VELscope® System, abnormal tissue typically appears as an irregular, dark area that stands out against the otherwise normal, green fluorescence pattern of surrounding healthy tissue.
What are Oral Cancer Screenings?
Oral cancer can affect adults of any and all ages. Some patients are more at risk of developing oral cancer, like those who smoke or use chewing tobacco. However, we often recommend an annual oral cancer screening as a way to keep up on your oral health. With early detection, treatment is both easier and more effective.
Why would Oral Cancer Screenings be needed?
Lifestyle factors like smoking and chewing tobacco can increase the risks of developing oral cancer. Even if you’ve quit smoking years ago, it is still important that annual screenings be done. The screening itself takes just minutes and can be helpful in preventing future oral health problems. Even if you’re not a smoker or use other types of tobacco, we recommend having a screening done regularly.
Who is a candidate for Oral Cancer Screenings?
If you’re a smoker or use other tobacco-related products, we recommend coming in for routine screenings. If cancer runs in your family, it’s important to consider coming in to get checked. Most adults are good candidates for these screenings. The benefits of having a screening done far outweigh the few minutes it takes to have it performed in our office.
What to Expect
Oral cancer can occur on the lips, gums, tongue, inner lining of the cheeks, roof of the mouth, or under the tongue. Visual inspection combined with palpation of the oral tissues and surfaces allows our clinicians to detect and locate early signs of cancerous lesions.
Should you opt for an oral cancer screening during your appointment, the clinician will perform both a visual and physical exam of your face, neck, lips, and oral cavity.
