I'm Dr. Amara. And today, we'll talk about the process of getting a dental implant from start to finish.
A dental implant is a highly successful way to replace a missing tooth and can be done in just a few appointments from start to finish. An implant goes into your bone and accesses the root of yourtooth. A final tooth then goes onto the implant four to six months after the implant is placed, and is able to heal and integrate within the bone.
Step one is one of the most important parts, as we personalize your treatment plan based on your own needs. Every patient is different, and we want you to be in the know and at ease every step of the way. Implant placement can be done with conscious sedation, where you are asleep and much more relaxed. We will decide this before the day of the implant placement.
First, we will complete a thorough exam, including a medical history, while taking all necessary X-rays, including a three-dimensional scan, and formulate a treatment plan based on your needs, the site, and the quality, and quantity of your bone. If a tooth needs to be extracted or the area needs to be grafted with additional bone, this can be done prior to placing the implant or on the same day the implant is placed. The plan is decided beforehand so that we are most prepared the day of.
Next, the implant is placed and allow time to heal. A customized healing cap or temporary tooth will be placed that same day so that you're able to leave with something. After four to six months, we will assess the implant, the surrounding tissue, your other teeth, and how they come together, and pick a shade for your final tooth. About three weeks later, your final implant crown will be placed. Following this, regular cleanings and maintenance of your implant will be necessary to allow your implant to last a lifetime.

Tooth loss can negatively affect your overall oral health. When teeth remain missing for a period of time, changes in the bone and surrounding teeth can cause further destruction of the oral cavity. Dental implants are the gold standard for tooth replacement.
Dental implants mimic a natural tooth by being integrated into the bone and held in place by your natural tissues. A dental implant looks like a cylinder or screw and it serves as an artificial replacement for the root of a missing tooth. For this reason, implants can be used to replace a single tooth or restore an entire arch, returning your smile to its original beauty and health.
